Ballyhoo

n.
1. Sensational or clamorous advertising or publicity.
2. Noisy shouting or uproar.

A systematic effort or part of this effort to increase the importance or reputation of by favorable publicity: advertisement, buildup, promotion, publicity, puffery. Informal: pitch, plug. Slang: hype. See knowledge

To advertise or publicize by sensational methods.

1. To make known vigorously the positive features of (a product): advertise, build up, cry (up), popularize, promote, publicize, talk up. Informal: pitch, plug. Slang: push. See knowledge
2. To increase or seek to increase the importance or reputation of by favorable publicity: boost, build up, enhance, promote, publicize, puff, talk up, tout. Informal: plug. Slang: hype.

Ballyhoo Bird: According to a July 1880 article in Harper's, the bird had four wings and two heads and could whistle through one bill while singing through the other. Anyone who has ever been on a snipe hunt will know what hunting ballyhoo birds was like. (Source: YourDictionary.com)

Binary

The binary numeral system (base 2) represents numeric values using two symbols, typically 0 and 1. The binary system is used internally by virtually all modern computers.

Blog

Short for "Web log."

Noun: A special, public or private Web site where an individual or group can keep a journal on the Internet. The journal can be added to as often as the person maintaining the "blog" (the "blogger") wants and is often updated daily. It is like an online dairy and can be used to share information about anything: personal thoughts and experiences, business news, reviews, products, audio and video, links, etc. Blog information that is instantly published to the Web, and it usually offers readers an opportunity to leave comments and/or link to their own blogs. Blogs typically use content management software that allows non-tech-savvy bloggers to easily maintain them. "Joe writes a great blog about deep sea fishing."

Verb: The action of posting a blog entry. "I'm going to blog about my vacation in Paris."

Blogging Platform

The software used for blogging. Common platforms include Movable Type, TypePad, Blogger, WordPress, and many others. Many are free to use online such as Blogger, while others are paid and require special application software.

Blogosphere

The name representing blogs and blogging, and the network and community they create.

Blogroll

A list of links found on a blog, to other recommended blogs, similar to links found on Web sites.
