Pantone Matching System
A proprietary, trademarked system of inks used in the printing industry to ensure consistent, reliable and predictable colors. Sometimes referred to as PMS.
PostScript
PostScript (PS) is a device-independent page description language and
programming language developed by Adobe Systems used to print high-resolution
text and graphics.
PostScript understands both text and objects
as mathematical representations. PostScript allows complex pages of text
and graphics to be controlled with mathematical precision, and since Postscript
images are made up of mathematical calculations, rendering can be made
to any output device and they can be resized while maintaining their quality
unlike bitmap images.
An industry standard for printing and imaging,
it is also an ISO standard. PostScript needs an interpreter to render files
and must be used with a printer that can interpret it.
Printer Spreads
Refers to layout mechanicals with the pages arranged in the order approriate for printing, which may not be the same order the pages will be in for reading.
Proof
A test page of a print project used to review for errors and flaws, and to predict how a print project will work on press and what it will look like when complete.
Quarto
A sheet folded twice resulting in pages that are 1/4 the size of the original sheet. Also, a book made from quarto sheets. Typically measures 9 x 12 inches.
